You can verify any California guard card or Private Patrol Operator (PPO) license for free at search.dca.ca.gov, the state's DCA License Search. Choose the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, pick the license type, and search by name or number. In about two minutes you will see whether the registration is current, when it expires, and whether any discipline is on record.
Why verification matters before you book
California regulates private security under the Private Security Services Act, found in the Business and Professions Code, Division 3, Chapter 11.5. The regulator is the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), part of the Department of Consumer Affairs. Two credentials matter to a buyer:
- The guard card. A security guard working for a PPO must hold a current BSIS security guard registration and carry it on duty.
- The PPO license. Only a licensed PPO may contract to provide security guard services in California.
A business card, a uniform or a confident website proves none of this. The state record does. Checking it takes less time than reading a contract, and it is the simplest way to know the people at your door have met the state's background check and training requirements.
Step by step on the DCA License Search
- Ask for the number first. Before you share event details, addresses or schedules, ask the provider for the PPO license number and, once assigned, the guard registration number of each guard. A legitimate firm will give these without hesitation.
- Open the search. Go to search.dca.ca.gov.
- Pick the board. Select the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services from the board or bureau list.
- Pick the license type. Choose the security guard registration type for an individual, or the private patrol operator type for a company.
- Search. Enter the license number if you have it. A number search is the most precise. If you only have a name, search by name and match the city and other details carefully, since names repeat.
- Open the record. Click into the result and read the status, the expiration date and any discipline or public documents listed.
What the record tells you
Status
Look for a status that reads as current and in good standing, such as "Current" or "Clear." Anything that suggests the license is expired, cancelled, suspended, revoked or otherwise inactive is a reason to stop and ask questions. A guard with a lapsed registration should not be working a post.
Expiration date
Guard registrations must be renewed every two years. Check that the expiration date falls after your event or assignment. If it lands the week before your gala in the Gaslamp, raise it now, not at the door.
Discipline and public documents
Some records list enforcement actions or attach public documents. A past action does not automatically disqualify someone, but you deserve to know about it and to hear the firm's explanation. If something is unclear, contact BSIS directly.
Name and address match
Make sure the company name on the PPO record matches the business you are actually contracting with. A firm that operates under a different name than its license should be able to explain the connection clearly.
A quick checklist to keep
- PPO license number received in writing.
- PPO record shows a current status and a future expiration date.
- Company name on the record matches the contracting business.
- Each assigned guard's registration number received.
- Each guard record shows a current status and an expiration date after your assignment.
- Any discipline reviewed and discussed with the firm.
- Guards carry their physical guard card on duty. You can ask to see it.
If the provider will carry firearms or batons, those require separate BSIS permits. Many assignments need neither. For a deeper look at the two main credentials, see Guard Card vs. PPO License: Who Can Do What in California.
How Dragon handles verification
Dragon Bodyguards is a booking platform launching in San Diego County for licensed, unarmed protection by the hour. Dragon is not a security company and is not a PPO. Bookings are accepted by licensed partner PPOs, which employ, insure and supervise the guards. Every Dragon holds a current BSIS guard card. Guard registrations are verified on the state BSIS license site before a Dragon is approved, and partner licenses are verified before a firm joins.
You are still welcome to look anyone up yourself. The state search is free and public, and a good provider is glad you checked. When you are ready, Summon a Dragon, or read our buyer's checklist first.
